Why volunteers make a difference in our community
Take a walk through one of Castle Rock's beautiful parks, hike a well-maintained trail or enjoy a youth sports game, and you'll see the heart of our community in action. Behind the scenes of these cherished spaces and activities is a dedicated force of volunteers. They pick up litter, restore habitats, coach young athletes and lend a helping hand where it's needed most. In 2024, the Town of Castle Rock's Parks and Recreation Department's volunteers showed up in force, contributing thousands of hours to enhance our parks, trails and programs. Their efforts have strengthened our community, protected our natural spaces and provided opportunities for all ages to enjoy recreation and play. Let's take a look at the incredible work they accomplished last year.
POST Partners: Caring for our parks, open space and trails
The POST Partners volunteer program is all about creating meaningful, skill-building volunteer opportunities that enhance the beauty and sustainability of Castle Rock's parks, open spaces and trails. Volunteers engage in everything from trail clean-ups to conservation efforts, earning community service hours while making a lasting impact. Volunteer hours varied by opportunity in 2024:
- Colorado Bluebird Project: 101 volunteers dedicated 2,202 hours, monitoring and protecting bluebird habitats.
- School Groups in the Bluebird Project: 264 volunteers put in 2,112 hours, contributing to the conservation of native bird populations.
- Eagle Scout Projects: Seven scouts contributed 1,357 hours, constructing benches, a tennis shed and nest box baffles across multiple open spaces and parks.
- School Group Service Projects: 141 volunteers gave 542 hours to trail and park maintenance.
- General POST Partners Volunteers: 651 volunteers logged 3,707 hours, working on everything from trail maintenance to Earth Day and National Trails Day events.
Through these efforts, our parks and trails remain clean, accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Athletics and Adventure: coaching the next generation
Research shows that kids who play sports develop teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills that set them up for success. Within Castle Rock's youth athletics programs, our volunteer coaches make this possible by stepping up to lead teams. In 2024, 276 volunteer coaches gave an incredible 8,413 hours, mentoring young athletes in basketball, flag football, volleyball, hockey, baseball, softball and more. By giving their time, these coaches have helped shape the future of young athletes in our community, teaching them the value of perseverance, sportsmanship and teamwork.
Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course: a premium experience with volunteer support
Since opening in 1999, Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course has been a premier golf destination in Castle Rock, offering a top-tier experience for golfers of all levels. Our dedicated volunteers serve as course marshals, ensuring smooth play and exceptional service. In 2024, 53 volunteers contributed 4,934 hours to maintaining the welcoming and high-quality atmosphere that makes Red Hawk Ridge an award winning course. (Note: Due to a high volunteer return rate, Red Hawk Ridge accepts a limited number of new volunteer applications annually.)
Therapeutic Recreation: inclusive opportunities for everyone
The Therapeutic Recreation program enhances the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by providing recreational opportunities tailored to their needs. Volunteers play a vital role in ensuring these programs succeed. In 2024, 80 volunteers contributed 682 hours, assisting in activities that promote independence, confidence and social connection. Their dedication helps create a welcoming space where everyone can participate in meaningful recreation experiences.
Teen Advisory Group (TAG): giving youth a voice
The Teen Advisory Group (TAG) empowers Castle Rock's young residents to play an active role in shaping Parks and Recreation programming. These students not only contribute ideas but also roll up their sleeves to assist with Town events and service projects. In 2024, 20 teen volunteers contributed 182 hours to events like Spooktacular, Climb4Change and the Winter and Summer Balls. Through their participation, TAG members help ensure that Castle Rock's recreation offerings remain engaging and inclusive for teens.
